The Dainty Princess Baby Hat is a lightweight crochet project made with soft yarn and a 4 mm hook. Designed to fit babies 3–6 months, this sweet hat works up quickly and makes a thoughtful handmade gift. It’s a simple design you’ll enjoy making again and again.

Crochet Baby Hat Pattern (3–6 Months)

The Yarn

This pretty and dainty hat was crocheted using the Anne Geddes Baby yarn sent to me by Red Heart. If you are interested in a free crochet pattern for a baby hat in a smaller size, using this same yarn, please view this pattern: Simply Pink Newborn Hat.

Since the pattern was originally published, the Anne Geddes Baby yarn has been discontinued. The original yarn was plied DK/Light Weight Yarn [3], 80% Acrylic and 20% Nylon. Each ball included 100 g; 310 m (339 yds).

You can use the following substitutes: Rico Design Baby Wolle, Cheval Blank Diane, Katia Saigon, Baby Bee Sweet Delight, Cygnet Utopia DK, Alize Sekerim Bebe, Knit Picks Brava Recycle, Stylecraft Colour Burst DK, Cascade Yarns Cherub DK, Jenny Watson Babysoft DK, Mary Maxim Baby’s Best, King Cole Comfort DK, King Cole Baby Comfort DK, Elle Family Knit DK, King Cole Comfort Kids DK and King Cole Little Treasures DK.

My Dainty Princess Baby Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Supplies

  • Yarn: Red Heart Yarns, Anne Geddes Baby Yarn. DK/Light Weight Yarn [3], 80% Acrylic and 20% Nylon. Each ball included 100 g; 310 m (339 yds).
  • Crochet hook: 4 mm (G)

Finished Size

  • Sized to fit: 3-6 months
  • (head circumference 17″)
  • height: 5.5″

Abbreviations

  • R : round, ch : chain, st : stitch, sts : stiches, sl st : slip stitch, hdc : half double crochet, dc : double crochet, x : times to repeat information in brackets

Gauge

  • 4 sets of (hdc, dc) = 2 inches

Notes

  • Please note: the slip stitch to join and chain-2 do not count as stitches, now and throughout this pattern.

My Dainty Princess Baby Hat Pattern – Free Crochet Hat Pattern

This hat is crocheted in joined rounds from the top-down in one-piece.

R1: 10 dc in magic ring, sl st to first dc to join [10]
R2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to first dc to join [20]
R3: ch 2, (1 dc in 1st st, 2 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to 1st dc to join [30]
R4: ch 2, (1 dc in 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to 1st dc to join [40]
R5: ch 2, (1 dc in 1st 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to 1st dc to join [50]
R6: ch 2, (1 dc in 1st 4 sts, 2 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to 1st dc to join [60]
R7: ch 2, (1 dc and 1 hdc in the first st, skip the next st) around, sl st to the 1st dc to join [60]
R8: ch 2, (1 dc and 1 hdc in the space directly above the skipped stitch of the round below) around, sl st to the 1st dc to join [60]
R9: ch 2, (1 dc and 1 hdc) in each space (between the dc/hdc sets) around; the last (1 dc and 1 hdc) will be worked in the space directly beneath the intital ch 2 of the round; sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R10-19: repeat R9 around (30 sets of dc/hdc around)
R20: (sl st into the 1st space, 2 hdc, sl st into the same space, ch1) repeat around and sl st to the initial hdc of the round (30 sets of hdc edging)

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions

  • Finish off and weave in ends.
  • If you would like to embellish this, I would suggest threading piece of ribbon through the spaces in R 19 and to tie the ends in a pretty bow 🙂

  2. This hat is so adorable!!! I made this yesterday. Not sure if mine has the diagonal look like this one does had a hard time on Row 8. But none the less I made it work and the edging really made this hat. I will be making more had such FUN. Thanks Rhondda your patterns are unique very pretty.
