Notes

  • I use a DMR to begin, but you can substitute your favorite starting method for projects made in rounds if you prefer.
  • The chain-1 space at the base of each earflap is included in the stitch count for the final earflap row.
  • This hat is crocheted in continuous rounds. Do not chain 2 or slip stitch to join at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker (or safety pin/paper clip) to keep your place instead.

Adding the Ties

Once the hat is finished, you can add braided ties if you’d like.

Preemie and Newborn

  • Cut 9-strands of yarn, each measuring approximately 20″ ( 50 cm) in length.
  • Pull the strands through the chain 1 space at the base of the earflaps, half way (until you have the same amount of yarn on each side of the earflap).
  • Divide the strands equally into 3-sections of six strands (using yarn lengths from each side of the earflap).
  • Braid the stands until you are approximately 4-inches from the end and tie a knot using all the yarn.
  • Repeat for the second tie.
  • Line up the ties and trim the ends to a similar length.

0-3 months and 6-12 Months

  • Cut 9-strands of yarn, each measuring approximately 25″ ( 63 cm) in length.

12 months to Adult Large

  • Cut 12-strands of yarn, each measuring approximately 30″ ( 76 cm) in length.
  • Pull the strands through the chain 1 space at the base of the earflaps, half way (until you have the same amount of yarn on each side of the earflap).
  • Divide the strands equally into 3-sections of eight strands (using yarn lengths from each side of the earflap).
  • Braid the stands until you are approximately 5-inches from the end and tie a knot using all the yarn.
  • Repeat for the second tie.
  • Line up the ties and trim the ends to a similar length.

Crocheters Often Ask

What yarns work well for this pattern?

Light worsted weight yarns like Red Heart Soft, or Caron Simply Soft work well for this pattern.

Do you have a pattern for a heavier weight yarn earflap hat?

Yes, I have a heavy worsted weight yarn earflap hat pattern available here, and a bulky weight yarn earflap hat pattern available here. Both are also free patterns.

Do I have to add the braided ties?

No. The hat can be worn without ties. The ties help keep the earflaps snug, especially for babies and toddlers.

Can I make the hat without the earflaps?

Yes you can. Simply work one extra repeat round for the main hat, and 1 round of single crochet in the back loop instead.

Can I make this hat longer?

Yes, you can add extra repeat rounds for the main hat pattern to increase the hat height.

  1. Hi Daya, I’m sure you could add ears to it 🙂 This is a very similar design to my Not Another Owl Hat Pattern where I add horns to the top for the owls. It is a great base for character hats 🙂

  2. Hi! Thank you for amazing info!! Just want to know if this hooddie could be done with kitty ears?? I dont want to include ears and make it look withs weird-ugly shape….thanks

  3. Hi Nicole, I don’t 🙂 I use a stitch marker to mark my spot and work in continuous rounds. This will give you a hat without a seam line and the small difference in height at the end of the hat is hardly noticeable when you are wearing the hat – much better than a line all the way down the back of the finished hat I think 🙂 If you are more comfortable working with the slip stitch, chain 2 method you can if you’d like. Just add that bit in (the hat will be one stitch wider for the whole hat length) and do not count or work into it on the rounds. All the best, Rhondda

  4. Hi, I have a few questions about the pattern. At the end of each round, do you join with a slip stitch?
Do you chain 2 at the beginning of each round?
If so, does the chain count as a stitch?
I’m trying to make the hat for my niece.
    Thanks!

  5. Hi Meaghan. Actually it does add up correctly. After Round 4 you have 32 stitches. If you add an additional 3 stitches, 32+3=35 stitches. If you read Round 5 it indicates you only increase 3x (three times) then work 1 hdc in each remaining stitch around. This means you are only increasing the total stitches from R4 by 3 more. This gives you 35. If you misread the instructions and increase all the way around the hat you will have too many stitches and the hat will not be the right size. This is why we only add 3 extra in R5. I hope this helps. Rhondda

    R4: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts) 8x [32]
R5: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3sts) 3x, 1 hdc in each remaining st [35]

  6. Thatndoesnt add up if you do it every three stitches like you are saying it is way more that 35

  7. No. This is not normal and should not happen. Have you checked your gauge? It may be too many stitches per inch? If it is wavy (ruffled like appearance) there are either too many stitches or the gauge is giving your too many stitches per inch. If it is curling under it is too tight of gauge (too few stitches per inch) or missed/skipped stitches causing it to curve. Gauge is extremely important for hats – even when you use the same yarn and hook as is recommended in the pattern. Hope this helps, Rhondda

  8. Is it normal for the hat to ravel up like curling up on the edge all the way around?

  9. Hi Michelle, I believe it took just over 1 ball of Red Heart Soft for the adult sizes. All the best, Rhondda

  10. Hi Misty,

You only increase in 3 of the stitches – not all of the stitches – for this round.
R5: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3sts) 3x, 1 hdc in each remaining st [35]

    Hope this helps!

  21. This post reminds me of my mother and her love of crocheting blankets. Although I've never crocheted, I know that it can be therapeutic and relaxing.

  22. I like the ear flaps and the braided strap. You were kind to share the pattern!#SITSBlogging

  23. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment Stephanie 🙂 No one in my family crochets either 🙂 My Great Aunt did and Great Grandmothers – but so far I am the only one who has picked up the hook since then – there are a ton of resources online to teach you when you are ready 🙂 Rhondda

  24. That is absolutely adorable! I so wish I knew how to crochet! My grandmother used to crochet and I have a huge blanket that she made. She passed away when I was 14 and no one else in my family crochets. It is on my bucket list to learn though, in honor of her! 🙂

  25. Rhondda, what an adorable pattern and finished product! I don't crochet or have a little one but I want this hat! It's too darned cute. A definite keeper. 🙂
