Crochet Hat Pattern – Free Crochet Pattern

Pinnable Image Half Double Crochet Hat Pattern:

Crochet Hat Pattern Free Crochet Pattern

This free crochet hat pattern is a basic hat pattern – this design uses soft worsted weight yarn – with wraps per inch of 10 (10 wpi). Similar weight yarn can be substituted – some examples include Caron Simply Soft, Vanna’s Choice and Loops & Threads Impeccable.

Please check your gauge as it is easy to allow your stitches to become more relaxed as you crochet the ‘repeat’ rounds.

This hat is crocheted in continuous rounds/spirals – you do not need to slip stitch to join or chain-1. You can use a stitch marker (safety pin, bobby pin, bit of scrap yarn, twist tie, etc. ) to mark the first (or last) stitch of the round and move the stitch marker up each round as you progress, to mark your place.

There is no seam in this hat – it is neat and tidy.

If you prefer using the slip stitch to join and chain-1 (or 2) and working in regular rounds – you can – just try to keep those slip stitches small.  This will add a seam to the hat (from the slip stitch and chain stitches) and make the hat a little bit larger, but it will still work.

Version 1 – This hat will reach to the base of your ears – if you want a shorter hat please see Version 2 below.

please help!!! How do you start a new row and join the ending row??? I am an old timer and not familiar with the new tricks…normally a HDC is chain to begin and slip stitch to the first ch 1 to close..

  2. says

Hi @JLYNSOUNDS – This hat is worked in continuous rounds/spirals – you use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round and just keep using the hdc around and around for each round (moving the stitch marker each round as you progress). This technique eliminates the chain-1 and slip stitch to join bit and the seam you get when you use that method…if you prefer using the slip stitch to join and chain-1 though, you can, just try to make the slip stitch as small as possible – it will add a bit of extra size to the hat and a seam but it will still work out :) Rhondda

Hi, I tried your Beautiful pattern and for some reason my hat did not take shape it stayed flat what did I do wrong do you work this in back stitch after a while or at all when I make this I use back stitch after about the end of the crown circle?

Hi Granny Muffit, The entire hat is worked in half double crochet (US Terms) in both loops. In continuous rounds/spirals (no slip stitch to join or chain 1). I'm thinking out loud…Did you check your gauge for the yarn and hook you used? In order for the circle to stay flat and not take shape each round must be increasing in size – either the stitches are becoming more relaxed with each round, extra stitches have snuck in or the hook and yarn being used are not providing the gauge indicated for the pattern – Recommended Yarn: Red Heart Soft Yarn (WW) – 10 wpiHook: 5.50 mmGauge: 14 stitches in 4 inches; 12 rows in 4 inchesIf you let me know the yarn/hook you are using and the gauge you get over 4-inches for height and width I can double check the calculations :) Which size were you making – so I can double check my instructions for errors too please :) Rhondda

Hi, RhonddaI was using a new hook with a bamboo handle I believe it is a Susan Bates a US I9/5.50 m.m but I was using a Bernat cotton delux I do use this kind to make these kinds of hats except I use after about the fourth row I work in the back stitch to make the hat curve downward, I use single and half double in the starting rows and half doubles in the downward slopes. Perhaps I should switch to your worsted blend to get the gauge and contour? My hat is a gift to a person who works outside in the community and she likes cotton to keep their heads cooler, if I can learn to make yours I will make a worsted one as well for them and some for the school children in our community.

Hi Granny Muffit :) What size hat? You are in luck as I picked up a ball of this Brand of yarn when I was in the States in December (we don't have the DeLux here in Canada – at least I have never seen it!). I will work up a quick pattern for you :)

Hi Granny Muffit – I will write up a pattern for all the sizes for you soon – I just completed one for adult medium to make sure I'd have the right numbers for you. So for a 5.50 mm hook and Bernat Cotton Delux – it is a denser yarn so the gauge I achieved was 12 sts/4inches and 10 rounds/4inches. To make a hat to reach mid ear you will need to follow these instructions: Adult Medium (fits circumference 23" height 7.5")R1: 8 hdc in adjustable loop [8]R2: 2 hdc in each st around [16]R3: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in the next st) 8 x [24]R4: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts) 8x [32]R5: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts) 8x [40]R6: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts) 8x [48]R7: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts) 8x [56]R8: (2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the next 6 sts) 8x [64]R9: 1 hdc in each st around [64]R10-19: repeat R11 [64]R20: 1 sl st in each st around, F/O [64]Hope this helps :) Rhondda

Hi Granny Muffit :) No worries at all – and I compared the Bernat Handicrafter DeLux with our Bernat Handicrafter Cotton and it is the same yarn – as far as I can tell – (we just don't have many colours other than pastels in our version and the balls are 50g balls) – I honestly don't mind – I am happy to help where I can. I wrote up a new pattern for all the sizes and it will go live on the blog on Thursday – I have lots of this yarn in my stash :) So pop by on Thursday and you will find sizes preemie to adult large in cotton with a 5.50mm hook :) I tested preemie, newborn, 0-3 month and adult medium myself to make sure. Have fun!! Rhondda

Maybe it is supposed to be glaringly obvious, but what size hook are we supposed to be using? I am using US G/6-4.25, and attempting a preemie size. It just seems a bit too small. Am I supposed to be using a larger size hook?

    • says

Hi Gayle, The hook size is listed at the beginning of the pattern – the hat will be much too small using a 4.25 mm hook. It must look itty bitty! Here's the information you need: Recommended Yarn: Red Heart Soft Yarn (WW) – 10 wpiHook: 5.50 mmGauge: 14 stitches in 4 inches; 12 rows in 4 inchesThanks for checking :) Rhondda

Just a question – Is this in the round without new rows – or is there a sl st to join and chain 1 missing?

    • says

Hi Arlene, This is worked in continuous rounds – no slip stitch join or chain 1. I apologize for the delay in my response – my comment system is not working properly and I have reported the problem but we are still working on fixing it! Thank you! Rhondda

      Hi Sandy,
Thank you :) I'm happy the comment worked for you this time! Not exactly sure what is happening with the rest of them. Let me know if it happens again please :) Rhondda

I am confused on how to start? You can’t make a half double crochet without a starting chain? How many do I chain to make a small adult hat? My sister has cancer and I want to make her a hat. Thanks, Loretta

I want to make some caps for Crochet for Cancer but I am used to a pattern starting out by chaining a certain number of stitches, sl st and then making the HDC in the loop created. How in the heck do you start off with a HDC with not base?

    • says

Hi Pat, Feel free to use the technique you want to start the hat :) I use an adjustable loop (aka magic ring) to begin for my hats as it allows you to completely closet the top hole after you begin. If you are interested in trying this technique here is a link to a tutorial from Tamara that will help :) Rhondda

Very welcome Terri :) I have this available in different types of yarn too – so if you are using cotton yarn (worsted weight) there is a different pattern – or if you are using regular worsted weight (like Red Heart with Love or Supersaver) there is a double crochet hat version available too :) Have fun! Rhondda
